Are you ready to embark on an unforgettable family adventure? Look no further than Dollywood theme park that surely promises endless fun and excitement for travelers of all ages. Nestled in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains, Dollywood offers a world of excitement, thrills, and laughter that will create cherished memories for the whole family. As a travel advisor and a parent myself, I am thrilled to share my expertise and guide you through these family-friendly havens. And while we have been to many theme parks across the country, Dollywood definitely ranks high and is a must-do!

In this blog post, I will provide you with a comprehensive guide to navigating Dollywood, a world-class amusement park that seamlessly combines thrilling rides with Southern charm. We’ll explore the park’s top attractions, including the iconic Dollywood Express and the adrenaline-pumping Wild Eagle coaster. I’ll also share tips and tricks to make the most of your visit, from avoiding long queues to finding the best spots for a family snack or meal.

During the Great Smoky Mountain Christmas season, Dollywood transforms into a winter wonderland with beautiful Christmas lights and festive decorations. My daughters were in awe of the dazzling displays, and it truly added a magical touch to our visit. If you plan to experience this enchanting time of year, consider staying at one of the nearby hotels or cabins that offer special holiday packages. This way, you can enjoy the Christmas festivities to the fullest and create lasting memories with your family.

Always check in advance on the park calendar about open dates for Dollywood. The park does close between seasons for redecorating and maintenance, and is occasionally closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays, closed a few days for Halloween, Thanksgiving day, and Christmas Eve and Day.

Now, let’s get down to business and talk about how you can save money and maximize your time in Dollywood.

First and foremost, I highly recommend purchasing your tickets in advance. Not only does this save you time at the entrance gate, but it also allows you to take advantage of any discounts or promotions that may be available. Additionally, consider purchasing multi-day passes if you plan on spending more than one day in the park. This can help you save money and gives you the flexibility to enjoy all that Dollywood has to offer at a leisurely pace. Know that there are many hills and steep treks at the park and it is pretty spacious.

If you’re a frequent visitor or plan on returning to Dollywood multiple times, it may be worth considering the option of purchasing a season pass. This can provide significant savings, especially if you plan on visiting during different seasons or attending special events throughout the year. You may even get a glimpse of Dolly, herself! My kids were hoping so much to see her. But she does attend from time to time, especially notably during the opening of new seasons, shows, and attractions.

To avoid crowds and long lines, try to plan your visit during weekdays rather than weekends. This way, you can enjoy the attractions with shorter wait times and have more time to explore everything the park has to offer. Additionally, research any available package deals that combine attractions or accommodations in both Dollywood and Pigeon Forge area. These can often provide great value for money and help you stretch your budget further.

Before leaving for your trip, check out this post here with some quick tips for traveling with kids before your journey!

Strollers: No restrictions here at Dollywood. Unlike other theme parks that prohibit wagons, and limit stroller size, here you can bring any contraption of your choosing! We saw wagons and strollers of all types. So if traveling with your own, no fear, bring it on in. For us, we are out of the stage of needing strollers day to day, so we opted to rent one at the park because it did not fit in our packing, and Dollywood were the only days on the trip we would need one. We ended up renting 2 double strollers because when our kids were all bundled up in their winter clothes, they were a bit too cramped at age 4 and nearly 7. This is a double stroller in the picture below with my 4 year old for reference. Granite, she is pretty bundled.

Time Saver:

When it comes to maximizing your time in the park, take advantage of Dollywood’s TimeSaver pass. This is the skip the line/fast pass option at Dollywood. It is an interesting one considering there are levels to pricing and it changes what you get to ride/skip. The 1st level is $60/person and allows you only 5 ride entries for the day and does not include Big Bear Mountain, which was the line with the longest wait for us both days and was long most of the day.

If you end up staying at a Dollywood resort, the Time Saver is included with purchase of park tickets or a season pass.

The TimeSaver Plus is the 2nd level and it is $80/person. This is the option we ended up choosing. This allows unlimited entries on all 13 attractions, and priority show seating. We did not attend any shows while there, as my kids just wanted to ride rides.

With this option, it is unlimited, except at FireChaser Express – which is single use.

Big Bear mountain is still not included at this level.

For a skip the line at Big Bear Mountain, you must choose the 3rd option which is the Time Saver Premium, at $99/person. In addition to a one time skip at Big Bear, you get unlimited entries at all other rides and priority show seating reservations made in advance on the app.

While we personally got the TimeSaver Plus for both days there, it was expense we felt was worth our time. Our second day was colder in the park. And some rides did have very short lines. So while it wasn’t a 100% necessity, it was a luxury we enjoyed having given how often my kids wanted to get on each coaster.

Our oldest was 48 in, and she is a rollercoaster fanatic. She was able to ride every ride in the park except two, Dropline and Wild Eagle.  There were more rides for thrill seekers here than what Disney or Universal offer in one park alone, which was a win for us.

For quick access to rides for the day, on entry, directly to the right, get rider arm bands for little ones to confirm heights and allow easy access to the rides. Then turn around and head left from the park entrance to Timber Canyon. Nearly all of the roller coasters are located here, apart from one, Lightning Rod. This ride was actually closed when we went (Jan 2024) and is supposed to open sometime later this year.

Parking – You can buy parking in advance on the website for convenience. One fun perk that is hard to predict is if it’s a slower time and there were not a lot of parking pre-sales, they occasionally offer discounts on premium parking for $35, instead of $45. The premium lot offers very close access to the park turnstiles, without needing to hop on the tram to get to the park.

The park was stated to open at 11am, but both days we went, we were able to get in at least 15 minutes early, but that was from the preferred parking lot entrance, not sure if that makes a difference.  The park close times vary based on time of year, check the calendar. The late entry time for this time of year is likely related to weather because the roller coasters and other rides are affected by the weather. Some cannot open until temps reach 40 degrees, for example Mystery Mine. Keep weather in mind if you are going to Dollywood for rides during the winter. The hydraulics need the oil to be a certain consistency to work properly and the oil gets too thick at the colder temperatures.

Ride Reviews:

The WildEagle needs to be the first. This was a top coaster for us. Downside – our kids could not ride, which was a bummer for the 6 year old because she watched some videos about it and was so pumped. Rider height min is 50 inches.  Okay, on to the positives! It was the most secure feeling rollercoaster we have both ever felt. It was extremely smooth, and fast. It has 4 inversions and a decent drop in the beginning after a classic slow assent. The drop is 135ft. And front row tip, you get some hang time before the drop if you get front row! Fun fact is it was the first of its kind in the US where you are positioned to the side of the track and feel like you are flying. Top speed of 61 mph.

Big Bear Mountain – This was the best for families and the newest attraction at the time of this post! Generous height restrictions allowed for both of my girls to ride and it was overall a fun experience. Be prepared to wait in line for this ride if you don’t have the Premium Time Saver pass, as the line was 30 mins or longer both days we were there throughout the day. Pro: worth the wait, as it is a very long coaster at nearly two minutes.

Thunderhead – May not actually be the fastest wooden coaster we have been on, but it sure felt like it. We enjoyed that one a lot. My 6 year old took us on it time and time again. Great for thrill seekers.

Dragonflier – This was an awesome coaster too. It featured independent seating with your legs dangling, but we felt even the 4 year old was very secured. Both kids and ourselves loved it!

Mystery Mine – This was a fun coaster, and packed suspense around every corner. This ended up being one that my 6 year old rode twice and then did not pick to ride it again.

Lightning Rod – This ride was closed for renovations during our visit, but it is an absolute must for coaster enthusiasts! This is the fastest ride in the park and was the fastest wooden coaster in the world when it was built. It has since been remodeled and is a hybrid coaster, but is a definite thrill ride!

There was also a great selection of young child rides and non thrill seekers.

Dollywood Express Train – This train is a coal-fired steam engine train that offers a great experience with a leisure ride around the park and the Smoky Mountains with excellent sight seeing, especially during the Christmas lighting time. Ride as it gets a bit darker for best lighting views. The trip is 5 miles and about 20 minutes. Pro tip – try not to sit right in front due to the smoke and soot.

In addition to the rides, Dollywood also boasts an impressive lineup of live entertainment. From musical performances to theatrical shows, there is always something happening at the park. The talented performers bring the stage to life, captivating audiences of all ages. It’s a great opportunity for the whole family to sit back, relax, and enjoy some top-notch entertainment.

Dollywood also offers a variety of exhibits and demonstrations that are interactive and educational. From crafts and demonstrations showcasing Appalachian culture to animal encounters, there are plenty of opportunities for learning and discovery. Some hands-on experiences include glass blowing and candle dipping, both which my girls enjoyed. There is the Blacksmith interaction as well where you can forge your own knife and talk to, learn from and watch the craftsmen work.

Food:

Throughout the park, you’ll find a wide variety of family-friendly dining options that cater to all tastes and preferences. Whether you’re in the mood for a sit-down meal, a quick bite, or a refreshing snack, Dollywood has got you covered. Let’s take a closer look at some of the highlights.

For families looking for a full-service dining experience, Aunt Granny’s All-You-Care-To-Eat Buffet is a fantastic choice. Located in the heart of the park, this restaurant offers a wide array of Southern-style dishes that will satisfy even the pickiest eaters. From fried chicken and mashed potatoes to macaroni and cheese and cornbread, there’s something for everyone. And don’t forget to save room for dessert – their homemade cobblers and pies are to die for I’ve heard!

If you’re on the go and need a quick meal, you’ll find plenty of options at Dollywood. Red’s Drive-In is a classic 1950s-style diner that serves up burgers, hot dogs, and fries – the perfect fuel for more adventures in the park. Another great option is Market Square Skillets, where you can enjoy a hearty meal of smoked sausage, peppers, onions, and potatoes cooked on a giant skillet right before your eyes. The aroma alone is enough to make your mouth water!

Of course, no visit to Dollywood would be complete without indulging in some classic theme park snacks. While exploring the park, be sure to stop by the various snack stands scattered throughout. From popcorn and cotton candy to funnel cakes and ice cream, there’s a treat to satisfy every craving. And if you’re feeling a bit parched, there are many beverage carts offering everything from lemonade to frozen slushies.

Dollywood Special Snacks: You absolutely must try the Cinnamon Bread from Grist Mill. The Mill is built on the traditional mill premise of a water wheel being used to grind the corn and wheat and was the first one in Tennessee to be built in more than 100 years. The Cinnamon bread is a decadent treat that is made fresh daily and served warm. You can get an optional buttercream or apple butter topping. We got the buttercream icing and we all loved it. The lines can get long at times, but it is worth it. The same cinnamon bread is also served at Spotlight Bakery. You can also get many other tasty treats at Spotlight – my husband enjoyed the chocolate croissant and my daughter loved her gingerbread man cookie. My youngest was asleep, by the time we enjoyed these treats. A special thing about Dollywood is holiday themed treats that are in abundance.

Dollywood also caters to those with special dietary considerations. Many of the restaurants offer vegetarian and gluten-free options, ensuring that all family members can find something they enjoy. It’s always a good idea to check the park’s website in advance for more information on specific dietary options and to plan your dining experiences accordingly.

When visiting Dollywood with your family, it’s important to plan your meals strategically. Consider the timing of your meals to avoid long lines during peak dining hours. Additionally, take note of the restaurant locations in relation to the attractions you plan to visit. This way, you can maximize your time in the park and make the most of your dining experiences.

Do note there are water refill stations throughout the park, and you can also get free ice water at any food service area. That a win! We brought a water bottle on the first day and we were able to refill it easily throughout the park.

The dining options at Dollywood are designed to enhance the overall family experience. Whether you’re fueling up for more roller coaster thrills or taking a break to recharge, you can rest assured that delicious meals and snacks await you. So, get ready to indulge in some mouthwatering dishes and create lasting memories with your loved ones.

One downside to the park is there is not a routine parade, and especially not a Christmas parade, which could be a beautiful addition. On the plus side, the lights were beautiful throughout the park.

They did have specialized Christmas food throughout the park more so than what you would see at Disney outside of the Disney’s Very Merry party. If you are planning to go to Disney, check out this post for making Disney fun with less stress!

Now, let’s talk about packing essentials. First and foremost, don’t forget the sunscreen. You’ll be spending a lot of time outdoors, and protecting your family’s skin is important. Comfortable shoes are a must, as you’ll be doing plenty of walking throughout the park and the terrain is full of hills. If you have younger children, consider bringing a stroller or renting one to save their little legs from getting tired.

If you’re going during the colder months, dress in layers. These packing cubes were great because they compress clothing without having to use a vacuum. They also help keep things organized between family members so my husband and I each have a set for our clothes and the kids have a set that was split between them. You just load them with your clothes for a couple days, and then zip and zip again while pushing down. We were able to pack much more than I thought would fit from just using our other cubes that we use outside of cold weather travel when we pack less clothes or if there is a washer. We loved using our hand warmers, as we would get extra chilly after rides and just being out in the cold all day. And definitely have 2 warmers per person if you’re going during the cold, as you’ll definitely want one per glove or pocket and not share or alternate.  And remember to pack some snacks and water bottles to keep everyone fueled and hydrated throughout the day.

While it’s tempting to try and do it all, it’s important to pace yourself and plan your itinerary in advance. Dollywood offers so many attractions and shows that it can be overwhelming if you don’t have a plan. Take breaks when needed, find a shady spot to rest, or catch one of the entertaining shows to give your family a chance to recharge. Trust me, a well-planned itinerary and some downtime will prevent exhaustion and ensure that everyone has a memorable experience.

As we wrap up this section, I hope these tips and tricks will help you plan an unforgettable trip to Dollywood. By sharing my insights and experiences, I aim to help families like yours make the most of their time in this incredible theme park. Now, get ready for the next section, where we’ll explore the special events and seasonal attractions at Dollywood that are perfect for families.

One of the highlights of visiting Dollywood is experiencing the park during the Great Smoky Mountain Christmas season. The moment you step foot into the park, you’re transported into a winter wonderland. The entire place is decorated with beautiful Christmas lights, creating a magical atmosphere that will leave you in awe. The Christmas light show powered by drones is a must-see, with dazzling lights twinkling from above powered by hundreds of drones performing in a beautiful show.  The show is called Joyful, rightfully so and is the newest addition to the holiday season festivities.  This will surely create beautiful and lasting memories for your family.

But the Christmas season is not the only time to visit Dollywood. Throughout the year, the park hosts a variety of special events and themed celebrations that cater to families. From the I Will Always Love You Music festival, where you can experience the art of songwriting and enjoy learning about the stories behind the songs to the Flower & Food festival, where you can enjoy large blooming sculpture masterpieces, and dance under the Umbrella Sky, and delight in garden-fresh flavors throughout the park, there’s always something happening at Dollywood.

There is also a Smoky Mountain Summer Celebration that boasts extended hours with nightly fireworks in addition to the drone spectacular, and the Harvest Festival to experience the #1 Fall Family event as voted by Readers of USA Today. The park also hosts concerts featuring renowned artists, providing a unique entertainment experience for families.
