When you’ve been dreaming about a Caribbean getaway, there’s something undeniably exciting about finally booking it. We headed to Sandals Dunn’s River in Ocho Rios, Jamaica for a four-night couples trip, and came home with a full range of experiences — stunning resort life, adventure excursions, unforgettable food, a cold front we did not see coming, and a travel story that will go down in the books. Here’s the full, honest rundown.
Arriving in Jamaica: A Third World Country Perspective
One of the things that struck us almost immediately was the context of where we were. Jamaica is a beautiful island, but stepping outside the resort bubble gives you a real glimpse into daily life in a developing country — something worth being mentally prepared for as a traveler. The contrast between the lush, perfectly maintained resort grounds and the surrounding areas is stark and eye-opening in ways that are hard to fully describe until you experience it firsthand. It added a layer of gratitude to the whole trip that we weren’t quite expecting.
We’ll come back to the travel chaos on the way home — because that story deserves its own section.
The Resort: Absolutely Beautiful
This was our first all-inclusive resort experience, though the couple we traveled with had been to several before — Excellence, Nickelodeon, and other Sandals properties. So we had a good built-in benchmark. The verdict? Sandals Dunn’s River set the bar high.
The resort itself is stunning. Lush landscaping, gorgeous architecture, and that unmistakable Caribbean color palette everywhere you look. From the moment you arrive, it feels intentional and polished in a way that makes it easy to just exhale and settle in.
The beach is beautiful — soft sand, clear water, classic Jamaica. The main pool is impressively large with multiple connected segments, giving it a resort-within-a-resort feel. There are also several scattered hot tubs throughout the property, which ended up being especially appreciated given the weather situation (more on that shortly). The whole property is designed for couples — romantic, private where it needs to be, and social where you want it to be.
The room did not disappoint. We had a comfortable king bed, a large soaking tub, and a shower genuinely big enough for two — the kind of bathroom setup that makes a couples trip feel extra special. Robes and slippers were waiting for us, and yes, we wore them constantly and have zero regrets about it.
For anyone new to the all-inclusive concept — and we were — it’s worth spelling out what that actually means at Sandals. Everything is included: all meals at every restaurant, all drinks at every bar, room service, and snacks throughout the day. There’s no tab running in the background, no moment of hesitation before ordering another round. It’s a genuinely freeing way to vacation once you settle into it. Our drink of choice became the blackberry mojito on the rocks — refreshing, perfectly balanced, and something we ordered more times than we can count. If you go, start there.
The resort also has a well-equipped gym, which we made a point to use regularly. It’s easy to let a resort trip become purely indulgent, but having a solid fitness facility made it easy to keep some routine while still fully enjoying everything else.

The Cold Front Nobody Warned Us About
We traveled at the beginning of February, and we landed right in the middle of a cold front. Yes, in Jamaica.
Here’s the honest truth: the pools were too cold for our comfort, the beach was chilly, and the water sports were closed every single day due to rough water conditions. Even the resort workers were bundled up in jackets and pants — which really tells you everything. When the locals are cold, you know it’s not typical.
Could we have had a more “classic” Jamaica beach experience with better timing? Without a doubt. The wind also limited some of the onsite daytime activities, so it’s fair to say the weather shaped our trip more than we’d have liked. It would have been a meaningfully different experience with a week of sunshine and calm water — and we say that not as a complaint, but as genuinely useful context for anyone planning a similar trip.
That said, the resort is well-rounded enough that we still had a fantastic time. The bars, the restaurants, the evening entertainment, the excursions — none of that was affected. And the daytime art activities ended up being a highlight we wouldn’t have prioritized otherwise. The painting classes were charming, low-key, and fun — and we came home with actual pieces of art we made ourselves, which turned out to be some of our favorite souvenirs from the whole trip. Sometimes the weather forces you into the things you wouldn’t have chosen, and you end up grateful for it.
We’d still recommend avoiding early February if beach and water sports are your top priority. Late spring through summer tends to offer the most reliably warm, calm conditions in Jamaica.
The hot tubs, thankfully, were warm and extremely well-used.
The Food: Best All-Inclusive We’ve Experienced
This is where Sandals genuinely blew us away — and remember, we had a well-traveled couple with us who had done multiple all-inclusives to compare against. The food at Sandals Dunn’s River was by far the best of any all-inclusive they had experienced, and we have zero reason to doubt that assessment.
The variety of restaurants meant we were mixing it up every single day, often hitting more than one spot per evening just to sample as much as we could. That flexibility is one of the best parts of the Sandals experience — there’s no pressure, no extra charge, just the freedom to eat wherever sounds good in the moment.
The sushi was an absolute standout. So fresh, such a great assortment — it honestly rivaled standalone sushi restaurants we’ve been to at home. For an all-inclusive, this was genuinely impressive and something we went back to more than once.
One area where the resort fell a little short was dessert. There were no late-night ice cream spots or casual sweet treat stations, which would have been a nice touch. That said, one of the restaurants served a fried pineapple (or banana) filled spring roll with ice cream that more than made up for it. It was warm, crispy, sweet, and indulgent in a way that immediately reminded us of childhood toaster strudels — but elevated. If you see it on a menu, order it immediately. No hesitation.
Breakfast was also somewhat limited. There was a buffet that did offer made to order omelettes, a small assortment of eggs, meat, fruit and other breakfast items and premade smoothies. There was also a sit down option at the greek restaurant, but the one time we made it there, the wait was pretty lengthy. Food was good though if you’re not in a rush. Sitting outside on the water helped with the wait.
The bars were genuinely endless. Well-stocked, well-staffed, and a cocktail always within easy reach no matter where you were on the property. For a couples trip, this is exactly the vibe you want.
Coffee was top notch at the coffee house on property. It was a small trek, but well worth it. There were cold brew, latte, espresso with condensed milk, and affogato styles. There sas also a pastry case with delicious snacks that we hit at least twice daily.

Evening Entertainment: More Than We Expected
We weren’t sure what to expect from the resort’s evening programming, but Sandals had a couple of standout events that were genuinely fun.
The magic show was a great night out — entertaining, well-performed, and a fun way to spend an evening with another couple. The silent disco party was a highlight we’d recommend to anyone. If you’ve never done a silent disco, the concept is simple: everyone wears wireless headphones with different channel options, so the dance floor is a mix of people dancing to different songs. It sounds strange, it looks stranger, and it is absolutely a blast.
These weren’t just filler activities — they added real energy to the trip and gave us something to do beyond the pool and beach on cooler evenings.
Pickleball courts at the front of the property were something we didn’t learn about until our last day there, and we do wish we would have found them sooner. But we made an enjoyable morning out of it before we left.
Mystic Mountain Excursion: Ziplining, Bobsled, Four Wheeler Riding, & Dunn’s River Falls
We booked the excursion to Mystic Mountain in Ocho Rios, which started with ascending the mountain on a ski-lift style chair lift ride, and combined ziplining through the rainforest, the famous bobsled ride, the Raggamuffin ride, along with four-wheeling through the mountains with a beautiful stop for pictures included— and then connected to Dunn’s River Falls experience. The whole concept is a lot of fun and we’re glad we did it.
The bobsled was a great time — a real adrenaline moment in a beautiful setting, winding through the Jamaican hillside. The zipline was enjoyable, though one honest note: the groups were quite large compared to other zipline experiences we’ve had, which led to long wait times between runs. If you’re used to more intimate zipline tours, just set your expectations accordingly. The views still make it worthwhile. The four-wheeling was our favorite part of the experience while we got to ride through the back country on a guided tour with glimpses of the beautiful mountain rainforest and water landscape.
The excursion then connected us to Dunn’s River Falls, one of Jamaica’s most iconic natural landmarks. We chose not to hike up the falls — there was a very large crowd that day and we decided it wasn’t the experience we were looking for under those conditions. If you go on a less crowded day, the climb is reportedly well worth it, so timing matters here.
What we didn’t anticipate was an unexpected delay at the falls entrance. We ended up waiting outside for nearly an hour because a piece of paperwork needed to be retrieved from the previous stop. Despite the fact that we had wristbands documenting all of our activities, the two locations had no way to communicate — no internet, no phone connection between them — so we simply had to sit and wait for a driver to make the round trip. It was frustrating, especially mid-excursion when you’re ready to keep moving. Something to be aware of if you book this particular tour: make sure any required documentation travels with your group from the very first stop.
The Travel Home: A Story for the Books
We’d be doing you a disservice if we didn’t share the full picture of getting home — because it is a story.
Our return flight hit a maintenance delay, which stretched into a flight crew timeout, which ultimately led to a full cancellation. The airline wanted us to leave the airport and stay at a local hotel overnight. Here’s where the third-world-country context became very real: many areas outside the resort have limited or no running water and electricity. Staying at an unknown local hotel in that situation was not a comfortable prospect for our group. Not to mention, the less than desirable reviews of the particular hotel they tried to arrange.
We made the decision to hustle and find an alternative. We got lucky — last minute flights to a nearby connecting city in the US opened up and we grabbed them. From there, we made the call to rent a car and drive home from Orlando rather than deal with further flight uncertainty. It was a long journey, but it was the right call for our peace of mind.
One very practical note for anyone traveling internationally: make sure your cellular plan includes international data before you leave home. The airport WiFi was not reliable enough for us to search and book alternate flights in real time, and having cell service was what allowed us to move fast and find options. In a situation that was already stressful, not being able to get online would have made it significantly worse. It’s a small thing to check before you go and absolutely worth it.
The broader lesson isn’t to avoid Jamaica — it’s to travel with flexibility and a backup mindset, especially when flying into and out of international destinations in developing countries. Travel insurance is worth every penny. Keep an eye on your options, and don’t be afraid to improvise when things go sideways. We turned a stressful situation into a bit of an adventure, and honestly it makes for a great story now that we’re home safely.
Would We Go Back?
Absolutely — with a few adjustments. We’d avoid early February to sidestep cold fronts and maximize beach and water sports time. We’d go back to that sushi bar on day one. We’d order that spring roll dessert at every opportunity. We’d have a blackberry mojito waiting at check-in and of course coffee at every opportunity. And we’d buy travel insurance without a second thought.
Sandals Dunn’s River is a genuinely spectacular resort. The food alone puts it in a different category from other all-inclusives. Add in the entertainment, the beautiful room, the gym, the painting classes, the range of restaurants, and the overall couples-first atmosphere, and it’s easy to see why Sandals has the reputation it does. Jamaica itself is a destination full of life, beauty, and contrast — and even with the cold front and the travel chaos on the way home, we came back grateful for the whole experience.
Sometimes the trips that don’t go perfectly are the ones you remember most vividly. This was one of those trips — and we’d do it again.
